Ten Top Tips for a Bat Friendly Garden

We’re very excited to be part of a collaboration between Wilderhood Watch and Wild Jam, which will involve carrying out bat surveys along our road.

Residents on Colney Heath Lane have already been busy gardening for wildlife by creating meadows (LHS) and ponds in their gardens. The green environment of the Alban Way walking and cycling track (RHS) close by supports a large variety of wildlife, but perhaps due to heavy traffic along the road at rush hour along with other pressures, our population of hedgehogs has sadly declined.

Ten Top Tips for a Hedgehog Friendly Garden

Colney Heath Lane is bordered by a mix of residential and school amenities as well as the popular Alban Way, farmland, open mosaic habitat and small areas of woodland. This means that we have stretches of hedgerow and mature trees which could be very attractive to bats, but also gaps in the greenery which may make it difficult for them to access particular sections. We’re hoping that information from the bat surveys will give us a much better idea of bat activity in our neighbourhood, and how we can help them.

We do suspect however that future actions to increase our bat population will revolve around planting native hedges in our gardens, so that the tree line along the lane is uninterrupted.
