Hedgehog Street Project

Simon, a rescue hedgehog who has been overwintering with a Bernard’s Heath family, was released on May 19 2024 into a garden on Walton St. Please read Jill’s Hedgehog Release Tips to find out how you can make your garden safe for Simon to visit!

Myka, the little rescue hedgehog pictured above, has spent the winter being well looked after by a Bernard’s Heath family. It’s now April 2024 and we’re happy to report that she has now reached her target weight and is almost ready for release. In anticipation of this we’ve been working very hard to create hedgehog holes along Walton street and Heath rd. The more we can create the better, as these will give Myka easy access to Bernards Heath gardens when foraging, finding shelter and looking for a mate. If she can find all that she needs in our back gardens then hopefully she won’t be tempted to travel further afield and encounter a busy road.

Myka has recently been moved to an outside run so that she can acclimatise in preparation for her release.

Top Ten Tips for a Hedgehog Friendly Garden

Buddy was found cold and miserable in a Boundary Rd shed in 2021. After some warming up, food, water and general tlc he was introduced back into the garden, along with a nice new hedgehog house. Since then he has been using his house for sleepovers as well as frequently visiting his predator proof feeding station.

Our Wilderhood Watch stalls have been a great opportunity to meet up for a chat, do some fundraising and swap some plants! Pictured here are stalls we ran for Sustfest 2021 as well as for the Warwick Rd Street Party in 2019.

Bernards Heath residents are enthusiastic about doing everything we can to improve conditions for our local wildlife. We’ve been involved with Wilderhood Watch almost since its inception, running projects to create habitat and food for pollinators, linking our gardens for hedgehogs and planting native hedging and trees in our local schools.
